Hopefully you notice that my blog looks a *little* different. I thought it would be fun to share the behind the scenes story: This past Saturday, I was drinking wine with my husband and I thought “I want to revamp my blog”. How hard can it be? The answer is: REALLY hard.
I stumbled upon the website prettydarncute.com and found their adorable WordPress themes. I decided on the theme Pretty Chic and purchased it right away. There was a warning message that said that I would also need to purchase something called the “Genesis Framework”. I now know that there are some themes that are built on the Genesis Framework and they will ONLY work if you purchase this framework. After HOURS (yes, hours) of trying to import both the Genesis Framework and my new Pretty Chic theme into WordPress I finally found a message board that informed me that I had to have a hosted site in order to import themes. Huh? After some research, I found a hosting service, BlueHost, that received good reviews from a fellow blogger. I thought this would be a simple – “ta da, your blog is now hosted”. Nope. Turns out I have to export my entire blog OUT of WordPress and into this new hosted site. It is now 2AM, I have had a full bottle of wine, and I cannot stop crying.
After a few frantic emails to the ladies at Pretty Darn Cute, they let me know that they could do everything for me (for a fee). That sounded like a wonderful idea and I will say – that is the best decision I made during this entire ordeal. Susan at Pretty Darn Cute was amazing. Not only did she export my blog out of WordPress and into BlueHost, she also imported and installed my new theme.
The bad news: the exporting and importing of my blog content took 72 HOURS and my blog was down this entire time. Once this was complete, we had a few issues with images loading which caused my website to be down another 24 hours. Once I got everything “up and running” I messaged my friends and family to check out my new blog. They all came back saying they were getting security warning messages. I tried accessing my blogs from my social media links (Instagram, Twitter, etc.) and I received 404 error messages. Turns out, the S in https stands for SECURE. Now that my blog is self-hosted (hosted with BlueHost instead of on WordPress) it is not considered secure until I purchase an SSL Certificate. Luckily, I was able to purchase a SSL through BlueHost.
So, the bottom line is: YALL BETTER LIKE MY NEW BLOG DESIGN! No, just kidding! I thought this would make for a fun blog post and might provide some useful information for those of you considering making any changes to your blog (self-hosting, importing a theme from outside of WordPress, etc.). My tip would be to hire a web developer and do it during a time where your blog will not receive much traffic. My blog was totally out of commission for FOUR DAYS. I cannot tell you how embarrassing it was when people (including MAKEUP BRANDS) reached out to me during that time to let me know they could not access my blog. The good news: I am in love with my new blog design. I think it looks more professional and is a lot easier to navigate. So in the end, it was all worth it!
