I have so many people reach out to me about how to start a blog that I wanted to share the information that I have as well as my recommendations. Here is everything you need to know about starting a blog.
CHOOSE A PLATFORM
I highly recommend using WordPress. It is easy to install, easy to use, and there is a WordPress widget for EVERYTHING. I know a ton of bloggers that have started on Blogger (or other platforms) and then transitioned over to WordPress.
CHOOSE A HOSTING PROVIDER
In order to have more control over your blog (i.e. the ability to add advertisements to earn revenue) and more functionality (i.e. a MUCH wider variety of plug-ins) then I recommend that you self-host. This means that instead of using WordPress.com to host your blog, upgrade to WordPress.Org and self-host with a hosting provider. This may sound like an unnecessary purchase but hosting is actually inexpensive and can include other features such as daily backups of your site and SSL certificates (to make your site secure and trustworthy). The two hosting providers I recommend are Siteground and WordPress.
- Siteground – I am currently using SiteGround after a year with Bluehost. Their customer experience has been amazing and they are very reasonably priced. Their most basic plan is $3.95/month. I chose to go with their middle plan that is $7.95/month because it included a free SSL Certificate.
- Have you ever noticed that some websites begin with https and others with http? Well, the s in https stands for secure. It tells your visitors that your site is trustworthy and that their information is secure. I highly recommend purchasing a SSL certificate (or getting it for free through Siteground)
- WP Engine – I actually used to work at WPEngine and I can attest to the fact that their customer service CANNOT be beat. It is pricier than Siteground so I would recommend it if you are a more serious blogger and are willing to pay more for top notch service.
- Update: You can get 20% off your first payment with WPEngine by using the code: “wpe20off” check it out here:
CHOOSE A THEME
There are various themes located within WordPress. However, I would highly recommend purchasing a premium theme that is on the Genesis Framework by StudioPress. Genesis makes your site more secure, easier to update, and it has built-in SEO functionality. This means it AUTOMATICALLY makes your webpage ranker higher with Google which results in more traffic to your blog. I saw an immediate increase in page views when I upgraded to a theme on the Genesis Framework.
Once you purchase the Genesis Framework, there are various “child themes” that run on the Genesis Framework. Here are some of my favorites:
Once you have purchased your theme, you need to upload the Genesis Framework theme first. Log-in to WordPress and go to Appearance –> Themes –> Add New –> Upload Theme –> and then attach and upload the Genesis Framework zip file. Once this theme is uploaded and activated (by clicking “Activate”) repeat the same process for your child theme.
These are the basics to starting your blog. Sure, you could start a blog for free using various platforms. However, I guarantee you that if you want to start a PROFITABLE blog – you will eventually end up migrating your blog to WordPress, self hosting, and buying a premium theme. My recommendation would be to make these investments from the start so you do not have to go through the hassle of totally revamping your blog like I did. The quicker you set up a professional looking blog, the quicker you will have opportunities to monetize your blog and recoup these costs!
