After years of patience and hard work I have managed to get on the PR list for multiple beauty brands. To this day, I have never shared a single PR contact with anyone. I have had multiple people ask for PR information and I always refuse to share. It seems to really piss people off so I wanted to share my opinion about why I think that you should NEVER share PR contact information for a brand that you are working with.
You Are Making Their Job More Difficult
Do you know how overly-saturated the blogging industry is? Everywhere you turn there is a blogger or influencer wanting free PR. I have heard from a few PR contacts that they get hundreds (maybe thousands) of emails a week from bloggers reaching out. By sharing their private contact information, you are only making their job harder by adding to the pile of emails they need to get through.
They Don’t Want It Shared
Also, have you ever noticed that it can be REALLY hard to find PR contact information for a brand? Sure, you can count on PR@brandname.com but I am talking about finding the specific PR person to email. It’s usually very difficult to find. To me, this indicates that they don’t want their private email shared across the internet. So why on Earth would you then share that information?!
Not Worth The Risk
Sure, there are a few times where I have made my way onto a PR distribution list with basically no effort. However, the majority of my PR comes from a ton of hard work. Contacting the brand over and over through various channels. Why even put in all of that work if you are going to risk ruining the relationship?
Y’all have no idea the crazy things I have done to get onto PR lists. I think you would be shocked at the effort I have put in. Have you ever been in school and pulled an all-nighter to work on something only to have someone waltz in and ask to copy your answers right before class? That is exactly what this feels like. You have all of the same resources that I do – so why should I GIVE you “the answer”?
I am in a few FaceBook groups where bloggers literally TRADE contact information. Here is an example of a post I see multiple times a day: ” I am looking for the PR contact for brand, I am willing to trade for brand 2, brand 3, or brand 4″. They make it sound like they are trading some sort of commodity, not a person’s private email. Inevitably, multiple people will respond and they will direct message each other the contact information. It baffles me every time. Please do not forget that these “contacts” are real people just trying to do their job.
So, when I refuse to share my contact information it is not because I am stingy, or selfish, or even a bitch! I simply think it is unprofessional to share the PR person’s contact information without their permission. What do you think? I would love to get your thoughts on this topic!
