I periodically receive PR products for free from various companies. Obviously, the hope is that I will enjoy the product enough to feature it on my blog or Instagram account. I am very open about the fact that I sometimes receive products for free and always do “unboxing” videos on my Snapchat. As a result, I have had a lot of bloggers reach out to me about how to receive free PR from brands.
My NUMBER ONE piece of advice is to BUY their products FIRST. Let’s say there is a makeup brand (we will call them “Makeup Company”) and I am dying to try their products. I send them an email expressing my interest. Their PR contact then goes to my Instagram and looks through my photos. If they do not see a single photo of any of their products – WHY would they want to send me anything? It probably looks like I am sending hundreds of emails to different companies just to get free products.
Now let’s say that I have purchased products from the Makeup Company. I have taken multiple high-quality images of their products, and raved about their brand on my Instagram. If I decide to reach out to the Makeup Company, they will see that I am truly a fan of their company and that I am actually interested in trying THEIR products. The Makeup Company will be much more inclined to send me something.
In fact, they might even reach out to you! There is a very large beauty brand that I have been obsessed with since high school. I saw a few bloggers receive their new collection and I was so jealous. I wanted to reach out to them but I realized that as much as I loved their products, I had not featured ANY of them on my Instagram. So, I went and purchased a few products from their new line and highlighted these products on my Instagram and blog. I made sure to tag the brand on Instagram (this is really important) and used hashtags that I felt would get their attention. After seeing my posts, THEY actually reached out to ME to send me PR!
So, this may sound counter-productive, but if you want a brand to send you stuff for free – I really think that you need to buy their products first. Then, tag the brand and use brand-specific hashtags in your posts to get their attention! I have also found that if you tweet the brand a link to your blog review or Instagram post they are much more likely to notice. Then, if you decide to reach out to the brand you can say “Here are a few examples of where I featured your brand on my blog/Instagram/Youtube”.
What is your best advice for reaching out to brands as a beauty blogger?!
